More comedy than is typical of me, but it’s summer and we should have candy.
The first three are free! Paid readers get a bunch of recipes (including my first-ever Substack video), a weird impulse buy, and the only TV show I’ve had time to watch in the last six months. Cheers!
This book floored me. I’ve been searching for it for the past 15 years, but it hadn’t been written yet. Now that it has been, and I have read it (all the way through once, and then back through in that way you re-read a book when you’re skimming for the good parts), I feel evangelized by it. Fox loves comedy as an art form, and analyzes it that way, paying close attention to marginalized voices and the evolution of the form as we know it. I fully cop to being obsessed with comedy, but even if you’re not: this is an engaging read about what it means to be human. 11 stars out of 5.
TAKE: summer Zoom workshops
My writing partner Sammi Skolmoski is leading a satire writing workshop this summer that is the single class I, personally, would consider taking over Zoom. She is impossibly funny and weird, and she’s taught me so much about writing satire (generously, bluntly, and helpfully). She’s not casual about comedy; she thinks about it masterfully and is one of the most intelligent voices of our generation. This is why she works for The Onion. Anyway, you should take this. I probably will also take it, so we can be classmates.
I will also casually plug my own weekly bird-painting Zoom classes here. They’re $15 drop-in classes, and if you can’t come live, I’ll email you a video recording of the course. Sign up based on what bird you want to paint! The first one is this week.
I bought my daughter one pair of these shoes because her daycare asked for some shoes that she could easily slip on and off for days when they do “swimming.” They came and they were much better than expected. “These shoes,” say the people, “are the talk of the daycare.” So I bought my daughter another pair, in pink. Then I learned you can be a grown-up and have these shoes, too. I am considering it.
