10 Things: Fiction, Friendship, Fun
My recommendations on what to watch, read, do, ponder, experience, plan on, and think about this week
Hello my loves,
Thank you for being patient. The first three are free! Paid subscribers this week get a late summer recipe, some secret thoughts about a musician I have feelings about (and some tracks to listen to),a newsletter to subscribe to, and more. Sorry kids, the secrets are always behind the paywall. Is this the week you take the plunge and subscribe?
WATCH: Deadloch
Rarely do a I get a thing as right as I got the idea of watching Deadloch, which is something I did after reading a LOT of television reviews early in the morning. And I did this for you. Well, for you and for Luke. I was tired of the things we were watching, and I wanted something that was next-level special. This seemed like it had to be the thing, and It. Is. It is equal parts an excellent murder mystery and laugh-out-loud funny and unapologetically lesbian. There is also a seal named Kevin, wrongfully accused of eating human tongues, exonerated. I feel a little like I felt when I watched the first season of Search Party, only I am more satisfied with the lesbian action. After the first episode, I think Luke was ready to marry me all over again, so good was the recommendation.
The image in that picture is the actual workspace for the amazing Office of Modern Composition, which is on the 20th floor looking out at Lake Michigan and is a writer’s dream. My colleague
(Pssst: SIGN UP FOR HIS SUBSTACK, ! IT IS AMAZING!) is leading a six-week fiction workshop in this space (and also online) through the OMC, where I, too, work. I can personally attest to the fact that Raghav is the best writing teacher you are ever going to get to work with. If you have a piece of writing you want to polish or develop, and you’ve been looking for an opportunity, THIS IS YOUR SIGN. (Seriously, if you want to talk to me more about this one-on-one, email me. I would love to talk about this. I am very involved with this organization for a reason.)Sign up for the workshop with the discount code Friends10 for 10 percent off.
Kat.
This past weekend we celebrated the anniversary of the birth of one of my favorite people on the earth. They usually provide the final item at the end of this newsletter (since they pass along so many amazing things for me to look at, see, and ponder). This week, in celebration, I’m putting five of my favorite things Kat has sent me above the paywall. All I ask is that YOU, in celebration of dear Kat, do one nice thing today, and not tell anyone about it. (She does this constantly.)
This article about the truth about lilac bushes and old houses.
This delightful NYT profile about Connie Chung about why so many East Asian women of a certain age are named Connie (it’s very moving and well written). Kat would also want me to make sure that you watch the new Janelle Monae video, and if you haven’t yet — clear the room of anyone you don’t want to see you sweat, and do it now.
