10 Things: Fox, Focus, Tofucatta
My recommendations for what to make, read, watch, do, think about, ponder, consider, revisit, and learn about this week.
Hello!
Here are ten things I recommend for you this week. As always, the first three are free; paid subscribers get seven more. Beneath the paywall are: a great decluttering tip, my favorite tissue paper (!?), and an advice letter I loved so much I wept.
MAKE: Tofu Ricotta
I’ve had more-than-friends helping me out lately, which has included, magically, a few folks making our family a few meals. Our friend Sophia made some tofu ricotta, which absolutely blew my mind; I’d never had it before! Here’s a photo of the ricotta on top of a slice of bread from a loaf that was brought over by Sky of Sky’s Chili Crisp, and then topped with some Sky’s Chili Crisp, which was also brought over by Sky of Sky’s Chili Crisp. (Sky also brought over some life-restoring congee and soul-restoring conversation. And I’ve heard a rumor that you might soon be able to order this chili crisp; I promise to tell you when that happens.)
To make the ricotta: blend 14-ounce (400g) block of extra-firm tofu, 1/4 cup (20g) nutritional yeast, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, 1 heaping teaspoon kosher salt, Freshly cracked black pepper, 1 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, 1 medium lemon, zested, and 1 tablespoon juice, plus more taste.
The recipe came from this post, which frankly is BRIMMING with amazing recipes, and I want to try them all.
WATCH: Platonic
I’m watching this one by myself, and haven’t finished the first season yet. It seems like it’s a teeny tiny bit outdated for 2023 (the idea that, in fact, a man and a woman can be platonic best friends, and this is shocking to people), but I also appreciate a show that centers a totally non-romantic, non-sexual best friend friendship, period. In general, best friendships like this can confuse romantic partners; we don’t talk about this type of relationship enough, and there isn’t enough media about it! The writing is very funny and smart, and Carlo Gallo is a surprise for me — I didn’t know who she was before I saw this, and everything that comes out of her mouth makes me laugh. I’m enjoying it.
PERUSE: The Floral Observer
Kat bought me a copy of this wonderful risographed nature ‘zine at CAKE Chicago, and I’ve finally had time to sit down and read it. What a G-D delight. I’m thrilled to find a riso press that (from what I can tell) only publishes nature-related things; the ‘zine features nature writing, a nature-based game, comics, and classifieds, and while subscriptions are “sold out” (?), you can still buy the spring issue and “pre-order” (I don’t know, they’re moving slowly and I APPRECIATE IT) the summer issue on their website. I basically promise that if you buy this, you’ll be filled with plant-shaped joy the moment it arrives in the mail.
