Love,
This is a good crop of things. I foresee more than five of these things being on my year-end Top 100 list, in the Top 20. First three are free! If you want a very easy recipe, a second list within this long list, and a web hack that will change your life, subscribe to the paid tier!

I’m bad with money. I hate this about myself; it feels like I’m being a bad feminist, because women are ALWAYS bad with money, and it’s JUST SO TYPICAL. But this year, my badness with money felt kind of scary — like, “Are we going to be able to make our mortgage payments?” scary. I decided I really needed help. A friend connected me with a personal finance educator, who suggested I try using this app.
I’ve tried a lot of budgeting apps, and they generally do nothing for me. Maybe it was my resolve to Get Better At This, but also, I’ve read in lots of places that this has been a game-changer for a lot of people. It’s a little bit difficult to start with, but it comes with a lot of videos and tutorials (there are even weekly live classes you can take online for free), and if you’re willing to put in about an hour of learning time, you’ll be off the ground.
I never really understood my money or how it worked, but I’m starting to wrap my mind around it. I still feel like I have so much to learn, but this app is giving me training wheels and making my finances feel conceptually accessible. At the very least, being in the habit of going into this app every day to reflect on my spending has helped me to spend less.
You can get a month for free, which I think is worth it! That’s plenty of time to decide if it’s for you or not, and the app gives you notice that your free trial is expiring, so you won’t forget to unsubscribe.
WATCH: “Sort Of” on HBO
My friend who is not named Leonard texted me this week that he needed me to watch “Sort Of.” Honestly, I assumed everyone was already watching it, but he said, “No one seems to watch it even ppl I tell???” So if you’re already watching / have watched “Sort Of” and want to sound off in the comments, I imagine Not Leonard might read them and hit you up.
But also, I started watching it IMMEDIATELY. I LOVE when someone asks me to watch a TV show! And I loved it instantly, much more than I expected to. Not Leonard describes Season One as “immaculate television,” and that feels right. The vibe is: it’s funny and it’s serious. Heartfelt. Characters are occasionally cringe but not like “The Office.” Canadian.
What if I don’t tell you what this is and just insist that you click on that link and play with it for a while? It is not a big commitment. (Thanks, Boob, for the recommendation!)
