My toddler loves to listen to owl calls. We had a Great Horned owl in the vicinity for a few nights. We happened to be night weaning at the time and had a very very hard night. At one point through tears she sobbed “Outside. Owl help.” Listening to the owl did indeed help. Absent a real-live owl, she likes listening to owl calls in the car almost as much as she likes to listen to Laurie Berkner.
Cool birds I have seen this spring: pileated woodpecker, an actual honest-to-god bluebird, and of course a few bald eagles.
1. Cheers for the Squirrel Buster feeder. I have one too. They're spendy but so good!
2. I recently added a bird bath to my feeder, and it has multiplied my delight. I added a Water Wiggler® to mine (it agitates the surface of the water and deters mosquitoes). When I see a bird in the bath, I stop what I am doing and tiptoe over to the window and say in the babiest of baby voices, "Are you enjoying the fresh clean WATER?" — these are deeply happy moments.
3. The hot skunk vs. mallard debate: "please this isn't your heart" – I died.
I used to say “I don’t like birds.” While I still freak out when one flies too close, this post made me realise I actually think they are awesome! Here in Aotearoa NZ, we go nuts over birds, so I think it’s rubbed off on me over the years…
I have become the biggest bird nerd in the past 2 years. I am happy with my binos especially upgrading to a harness (made a world of dif) but I keep getting ads for Nocs and secretly hope my partner gets me a pretty pair for my bday. I've made about 10 minizines about birds!
I'm going to "biggest week in American birding" this weekend - it's already started and I'm so excited. Toledo/Sandusky area for anyone curious
