(1) "Back then, I could order a calzone and eat it under the covers as soon as I got home. (Which I did, four times per week.)" — that's good living right there.
(2) Wait, there's a chicken newsletter....?!
(3) I saw a male indigo bunting once in 2011. It was such a magical experience that I still think about it regularly.
Carissa, I had the same screeching-to-a-halt thought — wait WHAT? a CHICKEN newsletter? Please link to it, Sophie, if you don't mind! (Unless it's a private newsletter! :)
This is so real! Perhaps the best true background, detail-rich description and witness to one’s own book. The process is so long and about more than the writing. Then you get a contract and it’s a 3-month deadline! I’m impressed about the five-page author bio. I think mine was half a page, thinking that it should fit in a book flap.
wowow. i remember you mentioning this book last year in response to a comment I made on your "Slutty Baby" post and i thought, i can't fucking wait to read that. and i still can't fucking wait to read this. congrats Sophie!!!
Congratulations, Sophie!!! Hurray! How exciting to have "Kin" coming out into the world. I loved reading this story of your book, especially the tinier behind-the-scenes details, and look forward to reading "Kin." What a special book. I've thought about writing a book for several years and seem currently stuck. But this section — "After I wrote the one book, I wanted to write more and more and more books. The scope of the project; the people on your team, actively rooting for you; the creative doors you can open because people are invested in reading a work in progress." — makes me think I need to get back on it. There is something so incredible and wonderful about making something with others. Mmm. Thank you for being inspiring in your own lovely grounded way. (And I'm sorry the sprint made you sick. Anne Helen Peterson has written about this too, how much you give up to get a book done, and it's disheartening. But as you say, we are stronger than we think! And I hope you are better now.)
My favorite bird? How does one pick?? I love the dazzling goldfinches who are visiting our feeder this spring. Also oriole birds. Also mommy cardinals.
This maybe an unpopular opinion, but I love turkey vultures. They are totally unappreciated as carrion eaters in how they tidy-up the world. Plus I love the way they glide on updrafts, with their ginormous 6-foot wingspan.
Congratulations Sophie, what a slog to get there, but it looks and sounds like such a treasure to offer the world.
Favourite bird: Eek, changes daily, largely based on what I've just seen. I ADORE creepers (brown here, and treecreeper back in England) and dream of seeing a Wallcreeper one day.
Current spring favourite is the blue-headed vireo calling outside my house.
Spoonbills? Just because. I'll stop at three or we'll be here all day!
Ooh, and the Scarlet Tanagers arrived here this morning! Not that I've seen one yet, but I could make out at least 3 calling when I was outside earlier.
NEW BOOK NEW BOOK
Congrats! This is so exciting -- just put in a pre-order. Happy birthday!

That gliding always looks like so much fun.

I'm so excited for your new book! Many Love has a very special spot on my bookshelf and I can't wait to add this.
This was so generous, thank you for sharing your process!
Also: currently extremely stoked to see the first lesser yellowlegs of the season on the mud flat in the lake. Such gangly cuties!
